Gen Ai

LLMs are probably going to be around for a while, but I won’t be using them at least not for this. I’m also not using them to generate any of the images. I’m not a super accomplished artist either, but I will do my own art. There are a few things at play here: If I am not going pay for it I don’t get to have it. Economics 101. Why would you out source the fun? If I do more art, I will become better at art. Not every map needs to be made by Dyson Logos. Not every landscape needs to look like John Avon. Not every character needs the bat-shit stylings of John Blanche (RIP) or delightful whimsey of Leesha Hannigan. They do random stuff and its hard to make them not do random stuff and sometimes they have hard coded out the random stuff. It used to be “Stop giving them 7 fingers” and now its “I want a fae with 6 fingers” <beep boop> “Humanoids have 5 fingers” I do use LLMS occasionally in my professional life, but mostly for code I know I’ll be heavily rewriting anyway - need a quick demo for the boss? It will sort of do it. The code is pretty good in small easy to digest chunks. ...

Rollinrollinrollin

There has been a lot of discourse1 in the last few days about when to roll. The general consensus appears to be that you should only roll when passing and failing are both interesting. I think I can get behind that. There was a great example of this at the weekend. My group is in the process of wrapping up Dragon Heist, and it has taken a long time. We organised a big finale session to have the big boss fight and warp it all up in a really satisfying way. Reader, we did not. ...

In the Grim Darkness...

The time is near, we’re planning to finish our dragon heist campaign this weekend. It’s been five years. Love you Mo. There are a lot of reasons its taken that long: Pando madness People having kids New jobs A whole heap of fart-arsing around on the part of the players. We are to plans what Tolkien was to tree descriptions What is the premise? The majority of the group are either fans (one of them is a absolutely stellar mini painter) or at least fan adjacent of Warhammer 40K. So we’re doing some thing in that universe. ...

Welcome to the Journey

I’m Tim. My friends and I have been playing RPGs for nearly a decade now. We’ve been taking it in turns to be the DM, but until now I have only been a player. But now the power is MINE HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! <cackles at the sky>. So this blog is me showing my working, and having somewhere to think about doing better. Broadly speaking I’m going to aim to introduce each campaign, each session and wash-up each campaign and each session. There are going to be a few of them as we have decided that we’re going to try some different systems. We’ve all enjoyed D&D immensely, but I have a whole heap of different ones that we want to try. ...
